My 1 day workshops are aimed at any level of photographer who is looking to improve their photography.  The key aim of our time together is to have fun and enjoy being on location but most of all I want you to leave feeling inspired and armed with some new skills to introduce into your photography work.

Join my partner Jade and I for our ‘Lighting on Location’ workshop inside the disused grade 1 listed, Woolton Hall in Liverpool, England. This is a one off and exclusive workshop.

TAKING PORTRAITS ON LOCATION

I have been capturing portraits for many years, long before I started shooting inside derelict and abandoned locations. I thought location lighting in derelict spaces would be similar to lighting a bride or groom in a gloomy reception - how wrong I was.

On this workshop I take you on a walk through the disused Woolton Hall, we discuss all aspects of location lighting with the use of speed lights and modifiers before I set up a series of lighting examples and we begin to capture images of Jade whilst utilizing the best spaces inside the Grade 1 listed hall.

I will talk you through what equipment I use as well as discuss some key elements to producing great model images in dark spaces:

  • Composition

  • Lighting set up

  • Modifiers I use and why

  • Colour matching

  • Challenges

  • Post processing tips

  • Lens selection

I will also explain technical aspects of portrait photography from my point of view. I will guide you through any of the technical challenges that we face throughout the day, such as camera settings and lighting adjustments should you need any guidance. Typical areas that I cover are composition, camera and speed-light settings and the use of a good quality tripod when in dark spaces.

Jade shall have a wardrobe of outfits with her on the day, which will allow photographers to capture a variety of unique images and differing styles. I will set up a scene and guide you through composition and lighting ideas, before allowing you the practice and capture your unique images. There is also the opportunity to practice shooting tethered to a laptop, so as to enable instant feedback.

I use Canon equipment, and we have the opportunity to use lighting and modifiers provided by Phottix. The main set up and all demonstrations will be on my lights and system. After that you are free to use your own lights or equipment if you have it during hour during ’shoot sessions’. I shall have tripods and some lighting props available to use throughout the day, including softboxes, snoots and lots of spare batteries!

OUR LOCATION FOR THE DAY

WooltonHallSpekeRoadx.jpg

Woolton Hall is a former country house located in Woolton, a suburb of Liverpool, England. Woolton Hall was originally built in 1704 for the Molyneux family; Robert Adams carried out extensive reworking later in the 18th Century. Throughout its 300 year history the building was the residence of a number of notable figures, including the Earl of Sefton and Liverpool shipowner Frederick Richards Leyland.

During the latter part of the 20th century the building went through a number of uses, eventually becoming a school in the 1950s, but later it became abandoned and there were plans for its demolition. However, following a successful campaign the hall is now protected as a Grade I listed hall. Images copyright of Paul Harris at Empty Spaces UK.
